MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO In late spring of 2006 I was approached by the Council’s Board of Directors and asked to assume the position of President/CEO of the agency. I felt honored and at the same time challenged. I knew of the Council since its beginning some 42 years ago and always recognized the preeminent role that this essential organization has played in this community as an advocate of the under served, and Latinos, in particular. Following in the footsteps of predecessors that worked very hard to make this agency what it is today I assumed the presidency. Since, I have been impressed by the volume of activity and the scope and reach of the agency’s programs, which annually serves more than 12,000 individuals. It serves children, at risk youth, working families, adult learners, and the elderly. Its early childhood and Head Start programs, and its adult education center, were among the first in the nation to provide bilingual services; and, it provides a comprehensive mix of bilingual social services. The housing programs of the Council are a national model because of their accessibility to the under served, the bilingual support services they offer to the elderly and the quality of life they provide for residents. The agency’s staff members have a reputation for effectively intervening with system institutions on behalf of immigrants’ rights to opportunities, services, and the resolution of their civil status. And every year, agency board members, staff and volunteers organize a far reaching Thanksgiving Drive, a Clothing Drive, El Día de los Niños (Children’s Day), Cantos de las Americas, and Education: A Family Affair, a celebration of families that successfully support learning. Wow!!! I am truly excited to be a part of this organization, and promise that very soon the Council for the Spanish Speaking will spring from the shadows and will take its well earned place among the most effective, renown and visible nonprofit organizations of Milwaukee.
