Luis “Tony” Báez, Ph.D. is the President/CEO of the Council for the Spanish Speaking, Inc. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he specialized in urban education issues, bilingual education and equity issues in education. He is the recipient of UW-Milwaukee Urban Education Program’s Meritorious Dissertation Award.
Dr. Báez is the former Provost and Chief Academic Officer of the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). After leaving MATC, he served as a visiting professor at UW-Milwaukee and as an educational consultant. For the past 30 years, Dr. Báez has been involved with civil rights issues; educational reform and adult education; issues of race, ethnicity, equity, social justice, and poverty. In Wisconsin and at the national level, he has been a leader in Latino community issues, Latino nonprofits, and bilingual and multicultural education. Through his work at the local, national and international level, Dr. Báez has been a strong voice in support of using education as a means to improve the quality of life for the economically and socially challenged.
Dr. Báez has been the Council's President/CEO since July 2006.
